Lake Pinehurst began with
Horse Creek, a small spring-fed stream that cut through an area of Pinehurst
that had little habitation other than a small farm in the area now occupied
by Lake Point Villas and Aronimink Condominiums.
In 1950, the Pinehurst resort built a small lake that fronted what is now
Westlake Point. In 1972, following the Diamondhead Corporation’s purchase of
Pinehurst from the Tufts family, the lake was expanded to its present
configuration to create an aquifer with which to provide irrigation to the
original five Pinehurst golf courses. In 1983, a waterfront owner by the
name of Al Bethel spearheaded initial discussions concerning the concept of
a property owners association for lake area residents. On November 20, 1984,
Bethel, Bud McManus, Mal Owings and Mac Raffo met with interested property
owners to review a proposed charter. On March 25, 1985, the first Charter
was mailed to Lake Pinehurst Residents with an invitation to the first
annual meeting of the Lake Pinehurst Association.
The original charter’s
stated purpose is as follows: To encourage, promote, protect, support and
enhance the living environment on and surrounding Lake Pinehurst; to provide
a coherent voice for the residents of Lake Pinehurst with all units of
government and the lake owners; to be aware of all pending legislation and
regulations which may effect (sic) the living standards enjoyed by Lake
Pinehurst residents and arrive at a consensus on what, if any, course the
Association should pursue to accomplish these stated purposes. While wording
may change with time, the concept remains sacrosanct – to protect the lake
and surrounding environs for the benefit of the Pinehurst Resort and it's
members. Other
communities with private lakes for boating include:
Seven Lakes and
Wood Lake in Moore County. |
